I need a jump start sometimes. Wild Mind will do it, but during the holidays, when screens large and small seem to be filled with too many chase scenes, exploding cars, and thin characters, I search for a good movie.
Always on the lookout for one with multi-layered characters, unique settings, relationships, or intriguing problems to solve.
One of these overlooked gems is 84 Charring Cross Road. Anne Bancroft neither faints nor sighs in this movie. She’s awesome as always. A far cry from the seductress she plays in The Graduate, in this literary film, she is a solitary woman – strong, determined, intelligent, and vulnerable. She loves, loses and keeps on living. Across the pond, Anthony Hopkins feeds her literary appetite and manages to love both his wife, books, and her – not necessarily in that order or awareness.
