WRITING IS A SOLITARY OCCUPATION, so why join a writers’ group? I have always made excuses for not joining one, the primary one being that I have no free time. The other, I admit, was that I just thought it would slow me down.

So when a local library invited me to start a writers group in my area, it was almost funny, because I’d never been to, let alone joined one. I’ve taught creative writing, I’ve attended writing conferences, but those, in a way, are their own version of solitary occupations. You are in complete control of your time and what you choose to share or hear.

But as I met with other writers and started the brainstorming process, I started to get excited about the project, thinking of all the things there were to talk about, regardless of genre or experience among the participants.

We were free to design a meaty, flexible workshop to kickstart a new, fresh writing group that will meet the needs of all participants. Also, in having several author/moderators, no one person is taking on 100% of the workload. I think that’s a much more realistic format, since most writers, including me, still have our day jobs!

So, if you live in Orange County, CA, see the flyer for details and come join us!

Share your experience with writers groups – pros and cons. I’ll be posting about our progress.
